Guide

Do you need a permit to put a crane on the street?

If the crane can set up entirely on private property, you may not need a city permit for the space. When it has to use a street, sidewalk, boulevard or parking lane, most BC cities want to know first.

What usually needs a permit

  • Closing part of a street or sidewalk for the lift
  • Reserving parking spaces for the crane and the delivery
  • Using the space above a sidewalk or road during the lift

Examples

The City of Vancouver's construction street use permits cover use of the street right-of-way — roadways, sidewalks, boulevards and the air space above.

The City of North Vancouver issues temporary street use permits for closing part of a street or sidewalk, or reserving parking for crane operations, and asks for the application to be complete five full business days before the work where the parking isn't time-restricted.

Rules differ in every city

Each municipality has its own process, fees and notice periods. Check with your city's engineering or permits office as soon as you have a date — or ask us when you book and we'll tell you what we know about your area.
